2008 Audi R8 Review

2008 Audi R8 Review The R8 is a brand-new sports car named after the Le Mans winning R8 race car. Other than some shared technologies, however, the 2008 R8 has little to do with the original and is more based on the 2003 Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car. With just two seats and a mid-engine design, the R8 is designed for pure speed.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

With its roots in one of the world’s finest race cars, the Audi R8 has some big shoes to fill. As Audi’s first exotic sports car, it lives up to Audi fit and finish. It’s interior is roomy and well thought out, and the R8 handles like a dream. The exterior is stylish and unique. Unfortunately, you can spend a lot less and get even more engine power from the R8′s more established competitors.

What’s New For 2008:

The R8 is all-new for 2008. It features a 4.2-L, 420 hp V8 paired with a six-speed manual transmission. If you’re not much of one for a stick, then you can opt for the R tronic gearbox, which enables clutch-less shifting in automatic mode.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power data is not yet available. No technical service bulletins or recalls have been issued. Audi’s overall reliability is about average. However, since this is a newer model, expect some initial kinks. We predict average to below average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores are not available. Side airbags, knee airbags, anti-lock brakes, plus stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ All-wheel drive
+ Unique, sexy look
+ Great drivability

Cons
- Unknown crashworthiness
- Relatively underpowered
- Automatic mode shifts coarsely

Head-To-Head Competition:

The BMW M6 costs $10,000 less than the R8, has a larger, 10 cylinder engine, a seven-speed transmission, navigation, CD changer and 80 more hp. The Jaguar XK R Coupe costs $20,000 less, includes navigation and a CD changer, but doesn’t have AWD. The Mercedes-Benz CL-Class 550 costs $9,000 less, has a larger engine, navigation, CD changer, and a sunroof, but it lacks AWD and has 38 less hp.

What Others Are Saying:

“Certainly, $115,000 is a lot of money for an Audi, any Audi. But owners who take the plunge will get a legitimate, near-exotic sports car – and a prime spot in any valet line.”Forbes

“Thanks to a 104.3-inch-long wheelbase, the R8 passenger compartment has more leg-, shoulder-, and headroom than a Porsche 911 Carrera or Mercedes SL. The user-friendliness is highlighted by enough space behind the seats for two golf bags.”Car and Driver

“As the first Audi mid-engined sports car, the R8 combines Audi’s experience gained from numerous motorsport triumphs with groundbreaking design and the acknowledged technological expertise of the brand.”Top Speed
