2008 Audi A8 Review

2008 Audi A8 Review The A8 is a full-size luxury sedan that debuted in 1997. An extended wheelbase model was introduced in 2000 and the second and current generation premiered in 2004. A high-performance S8 model was produced for 2001-2003, and returned in 2007.

The BuyingAdvice Team Says:

The Audi A8 is quiet, attractive, and roomy. While it might not have the clout of other German luxury sedans, it beats them in price and features. Other than its iffy reliability history, it’s one of the best on the market.

What’s New For 2008:

The exterior has been restyled with new grilles, lights, mirror-mounted turn signals, and wheels. The sound insulation has also been upgraded. Heated seats and satellite radio are now standard.

What is the Predicted Reliability:

J.D. Power gives the A8 2 stars for overall dependability. Problems with the first generation included brake noise, faulty climate control, and flaky brakes. It was recalled three times. Issues with the current model include flaky brakes, engine noise, failing automatic suspensions, noisy steering, and weak air conditioners. It’s been recalled twice for deactivated airbags. Expect below average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.

Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:

Crash test scores aren’t available. Anti-lock brakes, full side airbags, active front head restraints, and stability and traction control come standard.

Pros and Cons:

Pros
+ Roomy interior
+ Quiet, controlled ride
+ AWD included

Cons
- Annoying lane-departure assist system
- Subpar reliability
- Awkward instruments

Head-To-Head Competition:

The Lexus LS 460 has 30 more hp, but costs a grand more, lacks AWD, has a smaller trunk, and lacks a moonroof. The BMW 7 Series costs several thousand more, lacks AWD, a CD changer, and a moonroof. The Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class costs several thousand less and has 30 more hp, but lacks AWD.

What Others Are Saying:

“So I’m afraid that Audi’s first foray into the super-luxury segment of the market [Referring to the L] is not really much of a success. A car like this with gigantic rear quarters (it really is vast back there) should absolutely isolate you from all sense of being in a car. And with that slightly coarse engine and the jiggly low-speed ride, it doesn’t.”The Times Online

“The new A8 is a supremely competent, utterly complete premium luxury sedan. It sounds great, goes fast, and is terrifically entertaining when the pavement begins to curve.”Automobile Magazine

“All the same, I was sad to say goodbye to my Audi dream. The A8 transported my brood safely around town in posh celeb style that wasn’t too ostentatious. I adapted effortlessly to both the car and the lifestyle. In fact, the worst part about driving the A8 was cleaning it out before it was swapped for my next ride – a Dodge (ouch).”Mother Proof
