2008 Acura MDX Review
The MDX is a midsize luxury CUV that debuted in 2001. It replaced the SLX, which was Acura's first SUV. The second generation debuted in 2007 with a more powerful engine and larger wheelbase.
The BuyingAdvice Team Says:
The Acura MDX 6 is easily one of the best luxury CUVs on the market. It's extremely safe, well priced, and includes a rare standard third row. Top it off with sports-car like handling, and you have a vehicle anyone could love. One of the first is still one of the best.

What is the Predicted Reliability:
J.D. Power ratings are not currently available. Problems with the first MDX included water leaks, loose wipers, nonfolding seats, glovebox lights that don't turn off, and failing transmissions. It was recalled five times for corrosion, gear failure, overheating transmissions, weak fuel tanks, and misaligned pulleys. Expect average reliability. The basic warranty lasts for four years or 50,000 miles.
Analysis Of Safety Ratings And Features:
The MDX earned perfect government and IIHS crash test scores. It is one of the IIHS' "Top Safety Picks" for 2008. Anti-lock brakes, brake assist, full side airbags, active head restraints, and stability control come standard.
Pros and Cons:
Pros
+ Extremely safe
+ Well priced
+ Agile
Cons

- Controversial styling
- Mediocre reliability
Head-To-Head Competition:
The Audi Q7 includes a DVD player, but costs a couple thousand more, lacks a CD changer, leather seats, and a standard third row. The Infiniti FX45 costs significantly more, and lacks a third row. The Mercedes-Benz M-Class L350 includes navigation, but costs quite a bit, lacks leather, a third row, a CD changer, and has 30 less hp.
What Others Are Saying:
"Good use of technology and traditional luxury combine in the second-generation Acura MDX." - The Auto Channel
"Bottom line: the MDX takes corners astoundingly well for a hulking SUV. Leaving us with a relatively slow, relatively graceful luxury car on stilts. While Acura is to be commended for adding more of everything to the MDX- luxury, performance, handling and safety- without bulking-up, someone needs to remind me again why extra ride height and SUV style is worth sacrificing a good 25% in average fuel economy over say, an Acura TL." - The Truth About Cars
"The sum result is a locked-down competence and easy athleticism that rivals some of Acura's sport sedans. Trouble is, all the weight and complication required to make the MDX handle causes it to bog a bit in acceleration. Estimates of 0-60 mph acceleration hover around 7.5 seconds, but I think that's a few ticks too generous. Meanwhile, at highway passing speeds, the MDX just doesn't want to pull its own weight." - The Detroit News
